Coffee is the most widely consumed beverage across the globe. There is nothing as perfect as sipping a warm cup of coffee in the morning to kick start your day. It energises you, lifts your mood and even enhances your physical performance.
But there are also widespread notions associated with drinking too many cups of coffee in a day and the most common of all is that it causes dehydration. Is this really true? Let’s find out. The truth No, coffee does not cause dehydration. But as per the U.S. National Library of Medicine, the caffeine content in coffee has a mild diuretic effect, which can make you pee more than often. The diuretic effect forces your body to expel sodium and water from it.
Detailed research is still needed in this regard but as per research, this has something to do with how caffeine affects our kidneys through mechanisms like lowering sodium reabsorption. Our kidneys expel excess of salt from the body through urine. While making its way out of the body, sodium pulls water from the blood, which makes you pee more than usual. So, in general, if you sip too many cups of coffee then you have to rush to the washroom more. But this situation is not common for all.
The diuretic effect might be more common in people who drink coffee sometimes, as compared to those who have it more frequently. Why coffee is not dehydrating? It might seem simple to you that if you pee more means you lose more liquid from the body and logically this will cause dehydration. But things do not work like this. When you drink coffee, you also take that amount of fluid along with caffeine. So, you won’t lose more fluid from the body through urine.
Your body can absorb as much fluid as it needs and expels the rest. Coffee actually balances out the diuretic effects. However, make sure that you are having enough liquids (read: water) otherwise too! The bottom line So, your cup of caffeine does not really dehydrate you. In case you experience headaches and other symptoms like insomnia after your daily cup of caffeine, it might be due to some other reasons. Coffee is surely not the reason behind this.
Even if you are not having any effect, it is not good to have too many cups of coffee in a day. You should stick to a maximum of 2-3 cups of coffee every day. Overdoing caffeine may cause other problems like headaches, trouble sleeping, a rapid heartbeat, trembling, and more.
